The Alchemy of Storytelling

Alchemy:  The transformation of something of limited value into something of great value.
Story:  A collection of words and ideas that create interest, invoke emotion and engage the listener.
The alchemy of storytelling:  Transforming your stories into time, talent and treasure.

Watch the body language of someone when you say “Let me tell you a story”.  Their eyes widen a bit, their shoulders relax and they lean in just a tad.  They listen to what you say; they take your words and the emotions you convey and process them through the lens of their own experiences.  When we tell someone a story about our work, we are inviting them to become involved.

You want people to care about the good work your nonprofit does.  You want folks to get involved and to support your mission.  There is simply no better way to do that than by telling compelling stories.  Our brains are hard-wired to pay attention to stories and we are less likely to resist its message.  In fact, our listeners are more likely to SHARE our stories, and that allows us to spread our good work even further.

So, what makes a great story and how do we learn to craft one?  Join your colleagues on May 13 in Richmond, Virginia to learn more about how to transform your organization’s future through effective storytelling at Alchemy 2016:  A National Storytelling Conference for Nonprofits.  Learn more here.
